Blog, dictated on iPhone

Welcome to the Dragon Mobile Apps blog. I'm thrilled to announce the availability of Dragon Dictation on the iPhone. What a cool application! In fact, I'm dictating this entire blog directly into my iPhone. You know, I travel a lot and everywhere I go, people ask me about Dragon NaturallySpeaking on the PC and how they would like something similar on their iPhone. Well now it's done. With Dragon Dictation on the iPhone, you can speak e-mails and text messages instead of typing them. In fact, you can dictate anything and drop it anywhere using the iPhone clipboard feature. Start, stop, start again: long e-mails, short messages, a note, a post, whatever you want. Dragon Dictation is another very cool way to stay connected with your friends, families, and colleagues.

So the application is available today for a limited time as a free download on the Apple app store. We want lots of people to use it...and use it a lot! We have a bunch more applications, languages, and features planned, including Dragon Search...more on that later. So I encourage you to provide feedback, comments - anything you have to say about Dragon Dictation. We would love to hear your thoughts on what's great, where to expand, how we can improve future versions, etc. We want this to be a forum where all users can chat and discuss Dragon on the iPhone. The original concept and simplicity of this application, Dragon Dictation, originated from teenagers, travelers, doctors, and more. It's unleashed a wave of innovation, which promises to be quite a ride. Thank you. Mike

Would love to try this app, but since I'm in Canada for some arbitrary reason I'm locked out! This has never happened to me within the app store... is there some reason why non-US customers are locked out from trying this app? It reeks of lameness.

How come it's only available in the USA App Store?

Is this available on the UK AppStore? It doesn't come up in the search and the link from the website fails.

Looks like a fantastic app. However its currently not available on the Australian iTunes App Store - is there plans for this to be on the international stores- or may there be problems with particular non-US accents?

I want this app now! When can we get this from the app store in Australia? Regards Garry

Dragon Dictation is currently only available in the U.S. and we're developing regional roll out plans.

this thing is amazing. really. And free? Are you guys nuts??

One thing I wish it did: automatically send email to a particular address as an option. That's how I currently use '2Self' which requires typing. Dictation is much easier and safer.

Thanks for a great product.

Really would like this app now since its not available in Australia yet. Is there a sign up list? Instead of the App store kicking you back out because you do not have a US account an email notification would be great to advise when the regional roll out plan kicks in. Hope Australia is first ! ;-)

Whats wrong with the rest of the world???

Why not iPod touch with microphone? App store will not let me download. Your app indicaes "not compatible."

Could you go a bit more into the privacy policy? The Nuance website's version doesn't really address the issue of the app requiring a full upload of all contacts to you nor does it describe uses of the information or how to delete it. I'm concerned that you may disclose it to 3rd parties without prior notice and also to the carrier (since this is a US-only app, that means AT&T).

DragonMobileApps said...

@Fred: Nuance is actively looking into the serving this request & we will provide an update on the availability of Dragon Dictation on iPod Touch very soon.

Re: Privacy Policy -
We only upload contact names, no email addresses, to improve the recognition of those names overtime. Private information is secure per our strict compliance policies across the organization, and it will not be sold to third-parties.

Is there something in writing that delineates exactly what data you're using, for what purpose and what limitations are in place to guarantee that my data is protected and only used for those purposes? A URL would be very helpful! Thanks.

Great app, I've already moved it to my iPhone's home page. I'm astounded at the accuracy...and SPEED. But then, I'm a Mac user and haven't really tried any speech recognition apps in a few years because they were so bad back in the day...

S Koren said...

Is there a developer API/SDK to allow other developers to incorporate this into their own apps?

I'd like to see a "CLEAR" button so I can wipe an entire dictation and start over. I realize I could hit the Keyboard button, select all, and cut. But a Clear button with a confirmation dialog would be quicker. And what about a preference where it would begin listening as soon as I launched the app? It could function in essence as a digital voice recorder I keep in my pocket. I launch the app, speak, let it translate, and then hit the Home button to exit. I can relaunch and add to the text at any time...

How about for android phones?

Re. Privacy -
You can refer to privacy policies here:
EULA in detail described the usage of “speech data”. The EULA is shown at the beginning of the first usage.
You can also visit the nuance corporate privacy policy mentioned http://www.nuance.com/company/privacy/

Jeff Berg said...

I second the question regarding its availability for the Android. Some of non-walled garden folks would love to be able to use it. :)

Christopher Jost said...

I retain rights to my contact information so need a way to delete it from your servers should I so choose. Your privacy policy mentioned above pertains to your website.

This line: "Any such individual information provided to Nuance will not be sold or made available to a third party." differs markedly from the EULA when describing the collection of contact information "such information shall only be used by Nuance or third parties"

You also state in the EULA that such information "may be disclosed by Nuance to your wireless carrier, if so requested, or to meet legal or regulatory requirements" or "in the event of a sale, merger, or acquisition of Nuance by any other entity."

Worse, you state that simply downloading the software constitutes acceptance of the EULA before it is even presented!

Can you please bump this up a bit higher in your org so someone is actually aware of this?

I would love to see a Windows Mobile app!

Jan said...

I installed, read the terms and when I got to Privacy issues about the uploading of Contacts as they're used I immediately deleted it. Trouble is very few people read this in detail and will be unaware =FAIL!

Hans said...

Please make it available in the Germany App Store, please !

Anonymous said...

I'm interested in trying your app, but the contacts-upload issue is troubling. I'd suggest making this an opt-in feature in future versions, so people know what's being uploaded.

Anonymous said...

Android version please.

Would like to see it have the ability to drop dictated content into a Word doc directly in the App, and allow use of a Word Template like a letterhead. I have submitted Tech Ticket on issue of it inserting Extra Line Breaks in iPhone e-mails, not seen when sending/editing but seen when re-opening the message on another iPhone, every other line is truncated, or about half way accross.

when will it come to win mobile please?

DragonMobileApps said...

@S Koren: We support speech enablement of iPhone apps; We would like to hear more about the specific opportunity.

DragonMobileApps said...

@Sam: Thanks for your suggestions. We will consider these for future releases.

Re: inserting Extra Line Breaks in iPhone e-mails -
This would be best handled by technical support @ http://www.dragonmobileapps.com/support.html

I'd like to enable my writing app to support dictation (speech to text).

PLEASE release this app in the Japan app store!!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
DId I say PLEASE!!!!!!!!
(And for the iPodTouch!!)

DragonMobileApps said...

It's great to see the excitement.
We're currently developing our plans for regional roll outs of the app - we'll be sure to share more when we can!
We are also looking at providing for the iPod Touch, we provide update on availability on iPod soon.

The Phazer said...

The lack of international release is positively embarrassing - I'm not sure I trust my data to a company that's not competent enough to submit it to every store at the same time. Pretty much every other app developer in the world manages it. This is your software, there is nothing to do except hit the submit button in the app store application process. That's it.

please share your plans for other mobile platforms! since dictation is server based cant be too dificult? windows phone for me. i think this is a killer app

Anonymous said...

This posting dictated on my iPhone. NOT! Guess I'll have to order a US iTunes gift card so I can use the US store - or wait until it's released here in the UK. How long??

Anonymous said...

After reading the analysis of your EULA (written by Christopher Jost in this Blog), I would like to know how to delete my contacts from your servers. And, more to the point, I think you are misrepresenting what is in the EULA by your own responses in this Blog. This is a fabulous APP ... but, users should have the option to NOT have their private information (i.e. contact names) uploaded to your servers.

Anonymous said...

This app works well. I agree that people should have a choice whether to allow export of contact names.

Suggestions:
-Is there a way to have text show up while dictating, like usual voice transcription?
-It would really be helpful to have landscape mode available for landscape keyboard when editing within the program.

Hello,

I live in Brazil. Is there any plan to have a portuguese version (brazilian)? Thank you very much in advance.

We are developing regional roll out plans and will keep you posted.

Anonymous said...

Just another additional request for a "regional rollout" in Japan. What's involved with a regional rollout? Do you have to provide text in Japanese (for example) for the Japanese market?

BTW I'm a native speaker of English using the iPhone in English, but if I understand things correctly, I can't download from the Apple Store in the U.S. if I've also got apps from an Apple Store in another country. Someone please tell me I'm wrong about this. I'd really like to try out this app!

Sent a comment to the David Pogue review, But I would like to pursue a further query here...

My wife teaches reading at a local elementary school (very successful program affiliated with the University of Oregon) ... and my mind aches with the potential to actually SHOW children what their voice LOOKS like as TEXT... I posit that Dragon Dictate could revolutionize the the teaching of READING.

Rather than teaching the discreet tasks involved in memorizing the recognition of characters... or of adding to such development.

Doing without the cumbersome interface of computers, programs, and microphones and putting the technology via cloud in an elegant visual device was brilliant.

5 iPhones & Dragon Dictate for a small group of students & instructor would provide a mind boggling research. Interested?

How can I find out when the app for iPod Touch is available?

Anonymous said...

I use a VOIP headset/mic and Skype with my iPod Touch. Would the headset work with the app on my Touch?

Bradwich said...

Can't wait for it to hit the Canadian appstore. We understand the issues of an international roll out of any application, but it's still slightly offensive to a possible user base that has grown up watching the Americans have faster access to more things at lower costs.

Hi,

I am an avid Dragon Naturally Speaking user and wondering when Windows Mobile smart phone user should expect an app on their way.

Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Release it in iTunes France first, I swear I would pay as much as a big amount of euros for it, half this price if it is in English :) Your app would be the greatest productivity app ever. I am sure all the French speaking Canadians would join me in my request :)
